Empowering Change
The Rhode Island CASA Program
In 1978, the Rhode Island CASA Program came into existence, marking its place as the second program within a growing network of nearly 950 affiliates nationwide. Our journey is one of commitment, compassion, and advocacy for the most vulnerable among us.
Since 1985, we’ve proudly operated as a statewide program, extending a lifeline to children in need. We deploy staff attorneys, known as guardians ad litems (GALs), and impassioned volunteer advocates to support children whose lives intersect with the Family Court, a result of the Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) filing abuse, neglect, or dependency petitions.
Under the esteemed auspices of the Rhode Island Family Court, our program stands as a pillar of support and a beacon of hope for those navigating the complexities of the legal system.

Within our ranks, CASA attorneys/GALs provide supervision to dedicated volunteer advocates, working hand in hand on assigned cases. Complementing this dynamic, our team includes professional social workers who manage their own caseloads, offering invaluable guidance to volunteers. During our 30-hour CASA volunteer trainings, these caseworkers serve as instructors, sharing their expertise to empower volunteers in their newfound roles within the child welfare system and Family Court.
Our commitment to education is reflected in the five annual training sessions held in January, March, June, September, and October. In January and June, classes convene on selected days at the Kent County Courthouse in Warwick. Meanwhile, March, September, and October sessions take place during carefully selected evenings at the Garrahy Judicial Complex in Providence. As a token of our appreciation, meals are provided during these training sessions.
By supporting the Rhode Island CASA Program, you become a vital part of a movement that transcends borders, fostering positive change for children and families in our community. Thank you for joining us on this empowering journey.

CASA volunteers are “the eyes and ears of the court”, visiting monthly with children to ensure their safety and well-being, and reporting back to the Court. They also serve as “The Voice of the Child”. Children with CASA volunteers tend to achieve permanency more quickly, have more needed services, and do better in school.
